2. Keep Your Brain Active
Dr. Fotuhi's 6 recommendations for building a more powerful memory:
- Try a new hobby that you always wanted to do, but did not have the time to try it.
- Listen to the news on the radio and television more carefully, try to keep track of what is happening in different parts of the world.
- When stuck in traffic, do some mental gymnastics: try to think of names of two animals with each letter of alphabet; try the same with names for boys and girls, major world cities, or plants. Spell the name of each state forward and backward.
- Try crossword puzzles or sudoku.
- Take dance classes. Dancing is one of the best ways to "cross-train" your brain, meaning that the same activity would tone up almost all the lobes of your cortex. The attention required for you to plan your steps engages your frontal lobe, your attempt in keeping orientation in space and preventing falls for yourself and partner requires functioning of the right parietal lobe, remembering and learning new sequences of movements requires your temporal lobe and frontal lobe, your ability to maintain your balance and moving in coordinate fashion engages your cerebellum, and your joy and pleasure engages your limbic lobes.
- Shopping on a budget can also be a brain stimulating experience. Comparing prices and products in different stores in a shopping mall while keeping track of where each store is located in shopping mall can be quite challenging and requires activity of many different parts of your brain. Keeping track of specials, discounts, and remembering your bank balance on how much you can afford also require some degree of mental gymnastics.
